DeLauro Amendment Provides $500 Million for Renewable Energy, Rural Development

Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (Conn.-3) today offered an amendment during the House Appropriations Committee's consideration of the Fiscal Year 2007 Agriculture Appropriations bill to increase funding for renewable energy and rural development by $500 million. DeLauro is ranking member of the House Appropriations Agriculture Subcommittee.

"We have an extraordinary opportunity - to reenergize our farm economy at the same time we jumpstart the country's energy independence efforts by getting these new technologies out of the labs, onto our roads and into our homes and businesses," said DeLauro. "Unfortunately, our investment in these programs has been tentative - a pattern that continues with this bill. These are all USDA programs funded under this bill. This committee has a serious role to play here.

"Americans are ready to declare their energy independence," said DeLauro. "And with this bill, we can make that possible - we can tap the promise our farms hold to reduce our dependence on oil. We can provide a more secure economic future for our farmers."
