Statement by U.S. Representative Diana DeGette on Fuel Economy

President Bush Has Authority, Just Doesn't Use It

Today, U.S. Representative Diana DeGette (D-CO) released the following statement regarding her vote against the Republican bill to authorize the U.S. Department of Transportation to study new corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standards for passenger cars.

"This bill is the coward's way out. Republicans have ignored increasing fuel economy for my entire ten years in Congress and now they want to punt yet again. The fact is, President Bush already has the authority to make our cars go farther on a tank of gas; he just doesn't want to use it.

"I have supported amendments every year to increase the fuel efficiency in our cars, but every year those have been turned down. Had we acted when I first took office ten years ago our cars and trucks would be getting considerably more miles to the gallon. That would mean real savings for Americans."
