House Republicans Working to Reduce Oil Dependence

Diaz-Balart Votes for Prize Competition To Encourage Development of Hydrogen Technology

Seeking to encourage increased collaboration between the businesses, science, and educational sectors, the House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved H.R. 5143, the H-Prize Act, which will establish a prize competition to develop hydrogen energy as a practical alternative to fossil fuel.

"Congress cannot create alternative energy sources by waving a magic wand or speak it into existence," said Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL). "Only enterprise, science and the American spirit will move our nation toward energy independence. What Congress can and must do is help provide the incentives for progress.

"This bill summons the imagination and creativity of the American scientist to develop hydrogen energy - a more cost-efficient and environmentally friendly alternative to fossil fuel," Diaz-Balart continued. "By approving this important piece of legislation, House Republicans are showing the American people that we are committed to moving our country on the road to fossil-fuel independence"
