DUCKWORTH PICKS UP ANOTHER KEY ENDORSEMENT
CITIZEN ACTION/ILLINOIS PICKS DUCKWORTH -- JOINS TEACHERS' UNION, AFSCME, SEIU AND STATE AFL-CIO IN BACKING HER CAMPAIGN
Tammy Duckworth's campaign for Congress received another significant boost this weekend when she earned the endorsement of one of the state's leading groups dedicated to promoting consumers' rights, health care, political reform and environmental protection.
Citizen Action/Illinois gave its official support Saturday to Duckworth in the 6th district race. The group's decision came after hearing presentations today by Duckworth and fellow 6th district candidate Christine Cegelis. Citizen Action/Illinois is a coalition made up of labor unions, religious groups, health care advocates and grassroots political organizations. It is the state's largest public interest coalition and serves as one of the leading voices in Illinois on progressive issues.
"I am extremely gratified to earn the support of Citizen Action/Illinois, a group that stands up for seniors, for our environment and for the need for political reform-- and that works for substantive change at the grassroots level," said Duckworth.
Lynda DeLaforgue, co-director of Citizen Action/Illinois, cited Duckworth's commitment to public service and her leadership as key factors in the group's endorsement.
"Tammy Duckworth has a long history of public service to her community and her country. She will be a distinguished member of Congress, a fresh voice for the people of the 6th District, and a strong advocate on issues such as health care, the environment and support for working families. Tammy Duckworth is the kind of leader who will stand up to the special interests in Washington," said DeLafrogue.
Citizen Action's decision to back Duckworth is yet another in a growing list of recent endorsements of her campaign by major statewide groups. During the past week, the Illinois Federation of Teachers (IFT), the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Council 31 also announced their endorsements of Duckworth's campaign.
In addition, Duckworth had earlier this month received the support of the Illinois AFL-CIO, representing more than one million workers. Since announcing her candidacy in December, she has highlighted education, health care and retirement security as key elements of her agenda.
"These endorsements add significant momentum to my campaign andmore important are strong signals of support for the issues-based agenda that I have been discussing with the people of the 6th district," Duckworth said.
"I am eager to work alongside these organizations and to earn the support of all voters who want someone on their side fighting for greater opportunities for our children, protection for our seniors and economic support for working families," she added.
