Duckworth Receives AFL-CIO Endorsement
DUCKWORTH RECEIVES AFL-CIO ENDORSEMENT
STATE'S LEADING LABOR GROUP MAKES OFFICAL CHOICE IN 6TH DISTRICT
Tammy Duckworth's campaign for Congress received a significant boost Tuesday when the 6th District candidate earned the endorsement of the state's leading labor organization.
The Illinois AFL-CIO Committee on Political Education (COPE), which represents more than one million workers across the state, gave its official support to Duckworth in her bid to win the U.S. House seat being vacated by Rep. Henry Hyde. Duckworth, a resident of Hoffman Estates, said that she was proud to gain the group's backing.
"I am extremely gratified to receive the support of people who work everyday to keep our economy moving forward and our communities strong. This endorsement represents their support for my candidacy andmore important for the issues-based agenda that I have been discussing with the people of the 6th district since this campaign began."
"I am running for Congress to stand up and fight for families in this community, and to provide leadership that will address their priorities: their efforts to gain access to quality health care, to afford a college education for their children and to maintain the retirement security that they have earned through their years of hard work," she added.
"I am eager to work alongside the members of the Illinois AFL-CIO during this campaign and to earn the support of all voters who want someone on their side who will fight for a stronger economy, more educational opportunities for our kids and a fair tax system that benefits the majority of families in our community," Duckworth said.
Duckworth is a major in the Illinois National Guard and veteran of the war in Iraq. She announced her candidacy for Congress in December, citing health care, education and job creation as key elements of her agenda. In recent weeks, Duckworth has also taken the lead in calling on Congress to fix the alternative minimum tax, which-- unless corrected-- could impose a sizable tax hike on thousands of middle-income households in the district.
