Hoyer to Dems: "This Election is Ours to Win"

On Monday night, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-Mechanicsville) delivered the keynote address at the Anne Arundel Democratic Central Committee Jefferson Jackson Dinner.

"The Democratic Party has a terrific opportunity to make tremendous election gains both in Annapolis and Washington this November, and to begin to lead this great state and country in a new, positive direction," Hoyer said.

Hoyer noted that the American people are growing tired of the Republicans' incompetence, cronyism, and corruption. "They are demanding change," he said. "And, in 176 days - on November 7th - that is precisely what we will start to give them when we help elect Democratic majorities in the House and Senate in Washington, when we retain our Democratic majorities in the General Assembly, and when we send Bob Ehrlich and Michael Steele packing in Annapolis."

According to a recent AP-Ipsos poll, 73 percent of Americans now believe the nation is on the wrong track. "Whether it's the flawed execution of the war in Iraq, the failure to secure our ports, nuclear facilities, and mass transit systems, or their dismal fiscal policies, Americans have lost faith in the Republicans' ability to lead the nation," Hoyer said.

Hoyer said Democrats will present an alternative vision that includes bolstering homeland security, adopting a Manhattan-style project to achieve energy independence, raising the minimum wage, and expanding health care for uninsured Americans.

"This election is ours to win or lose-- but we have not won it yet," Hoyer cautioned. "Our intensity is the key to victory in November. Then, after we've won, let's give the American people the policies and agenda that they need and deserve."
