Pelosi Statement on Peace Officers Memorial Day

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement in support of H. Res. 788, a resolution on the House floor today supporting the goals and ideals of Peace Officers Memorial Day:

"With this resolution, we honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. We also recognize the courage and commitment of those willing to go beyond the call of duty to keep us safe.

"I especially salute the United States Capitol Police, who protect us and all who visit the halls of Congress. They are brave and selfless - putting themselves in harms way to protect others. They deserve our gratitude and respect every day.

"More than 740,000 Americans serve in the federal, state, and local police forces. They have always been tireless public servants. But since September 11th, we have asked our law enforcement officers to assume a much greater role in protecting us. In every community across America, law enforcement officers are our first line of defense against another terrorist attack.

"As elected officials, we have a responsibility to protect our protectors. On behalf of all of our law enforcement officers and first responders, my colleagues and I will continue fighting to provide the tools necessary to keep America safe. We owe these men and women - and the Americans they safeguard - nothing less."
