Congressman Henry Cuellar Announces $331,126 for Texas A&M International University

Washington, DC- Congressman Henry Cuellar announced today that TAMIU was awarded two grants totaling $331,126. The grants will be used to enhance existing programs at the University, including the Undergraduate International Studies and Foreign Language and Business and International Language programs.

The Undergraduate International Studies and Foreign Language Program received $157,795 to use for expanding the Latin American Studies (LAS) course offerings by developing 14 new courses, which will double the amount being offered currently. It will also assist in acquiring library and teaching materials, conduct two workshops to improve heritage language training techniques and conduct an annual Latin American Studies Week to promote regionally-oriented activities.

The College of Business has been awarded a grant for $173,331 to address needs of students, faculty and the international business community in the region through faculty and student participation in two interrelated activities. These activities include PhD students serving as research fellows at area businesses and the United Nations as well as the holding of a PhD Students Consortium, bringing together students from different Universities to exchange research and receive feedback.

Congressman Cuellar noted, "Grants such as these are a tremendous help to the University and the students it serves by furthering educational opportunities. These funds also help keep tuition low in a time when tuition hikes are the rule rather than the exception."

Dr. Ray Keck, President of Texas A&M International said, "Both of these efforts help to underscore our campus' international dimension and will better prepare our students for the global workplace. We appreciate the leadership of Congressman Cuellar in supporting these visionary inititiatives," Dr. Keck said.
