Pelosi: ‘Mission Accomplished' as Baseless as Bush's Justification for Iraq War

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today to mark the May 1 anniversary of President Bush standing before abanner proclaiming "mission accomplished," in which he declared an end to major combat operations in Iraq.

"‘Mission accomplished' has proven to be a statement as baseless as the President's justification for the invasion more than three years ago.

"The war in Iraq has cost Americans the lives of nearly 2,400 of our brave troops, the wounding of 18,000 of our men and women in uniform, and more than $300 billion. Without a change in the President's course, the costs in lives and our reputation around the world will only go higher.

"The war has not made the American people safer and it has damaged grievously the standing of the United States in the eyes of the world. Americans know that 2006 must be a year of significant transition in Iraq. That is why I have endorsed the plan of Congressman John Murtha, who has put forth a plan to make America safer, to make our military stronger, and to make Iraq more stable."
