Pelosi: Republicans' Answer to Skyrocketing Gas Prices Is Tax Breaks and Subsidies for Big Oil

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today the defeat on the House floor this afternoon of H.R. 5254, the Refinery Permit Process Schedule Act, which would given federal land to oil companies at no cost:

"While the American people continue to pay the price for the Republican culture of corruption at the gas pump, Republicans' answer to skyrocketing gas prices is to give Big Oil billions of dollars in tax breaks and subsidies. Today's attempt to allow the Secretary of Defense to sell or transfer federal land to oil companies at no cost, while failing to do anything to lower gas prices or increase refining capacity, is the latest example of the Republicans' failed energy policy that has resulted in record profits and record prices.

"Democrats have a new direction for America, one that will put the needs of the American people above profit-rich oil companies and provide real solutions that will lower the price at the pump."
