Pelosi: Darfur Peace Agreement Must Be Implemented Quickly

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the peace agreement in Darfur and President Bush's announcement of additional food aid for Darfur:

"The announcement of a peace agreement is a welcome step toward ending the genocide in Darfur. President Bush is to be commended for his efforts for the people of Darfur, and the hard work of Deputy Secretary of State Zoellick in brokering the peace agreement deserves special recognition.

"The hard work of implementing the agreement must begin quickly. The security situation in Darfur must be improved, and Secretary of State Rice's appearance before the United Nations Security Council on May 9 to call for a resolution expediting the dispatch of a U.N. force to Darfur reflects the need for urgency. The achievement at the bargaining table in Abuja last week must not be diluted through inaction by the international community. The people of Darfur cannot afford for us to waste a moment."
