Mr. LATIMER. Madam Speaker, if you watch the news regularly, you probably have witnessed an increasing number of attacks on places of worship.
In the past year, members of the Temple Israel Synagogue in Detroit; Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis; Beth Israel Congregation in Jackson, Mississippi; the Islamic Center of San Diego; and many others have had their greatest fear come true--an attack on their institution due to their religious affiliation.
When one house of worship is targeted, people of every faith ask themselves: Will the next time be at my mosque, church, shrine, or synagogue?
We must find respect amid our diversity and ensure that we continue to defend the fundamental freedom to practice one's religion in this country just as the Founding Fathers intended and as generations of Americans have fought to preserve.
Let us honor the lives of those lost by recommitting ourselves to a country where every person of every faith can worship without fear.
