Capito Testifies to Protect West Virginia Steel
Congresswomen testifies before ITC in support of anti-dumping on tin mill steel

WASHINGTON Testifying today before the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC), Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) called for the continuation of an anti-dumping measure on Japanese steel in order to protect the West Virginia steel industry and the jobs and communities supported by it.

Rep. Capito's testimony was part of the ITC's mandatory 5-year reconsideration of an antidumping order on tin- and chromium-coated steel sheet from Japan. The original anti-dumping order was issued based on a request from Weirton Steel Corporation, the International Steelworkers Union and the United Steelworkers of America.

In her testimony, Rep. Capito stressed the importance of steel to the entire West Virginia economy.

"The continued success of Mittal Steel's Weirton facility is critical to future viability of the manufacturing base of our state," said Capito. "In turn, continuation of the dumping order against tin mill steel products from Japan is vital to the survival of Weirton steel and the economic livelihood of that community and its surrounding region."

Rep. Capito went on to say that it is essential that our trade policies create a level playing field in order for West Virginians to compete fairly in the global marketplace.

"As long as we practice fair trade in this country, West Virginians can compete with anyone," Capito concluded.
