DeLauro: Concerns Remain on USDA National Animal ID System

- Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (Conn.-3) today issued the following statement in response to the announcement regarding the U.S. Department of Agriculture's implementation of a national animal identification system. DeLauro is ranking member of the House Appropriations Agriculture Subcommittee.

"Today's announcement is welcome news that we have some concrete steps in place for full implementation of a national animal ID system. The Secretary seems to understand the need for this system to be in place, but I question his resounding faith in this voluntary action, particularly since he told the House Agriculture Appropriations subcommittee on Feb 15th that he would be ‘very shocked if any piece of the animal system gets 100 percent identification under a voluntary system.' I agree with this conclusion and have raised this issue with the secretary on several occasions. I have other concerns as well, but the bottom line is that absent mandatory participation, the effectiveness of a national animal ID system is compromised. For that reason, today's announcement stops short of taking that one step that would make an effective system a reality."
