Ranking Member Morelle Statement on the Moore v. Harper Decision

Press Release

Date: June 29, 2023
Location: Washington, DC

"This week, the Supreme Court saw through the so-called Independent State Legislature theory, a fringe idea that never belonged at the Court--or at any court--in the first place. The Court made the only plausible ruling it could by rejecting an application of this illogical theory. This rebuke--like the Court's recent Voting Right Act decisions--reinforces the democratic health of our Republic.

Extremists used this radical interpretation as the basis to try to overturn a presidential election and as a tool to silence the voices of voters through partisan gerrymandering. The threats to our democracy have not subsided and anti-voter forces will not relent in their efforts to use increasingly unhinged tactics to undermine our system of checks and balances and the rule of law. Democrats will continue to fight for the Freedom to Vote Act and the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to protect and strengthen our democracy, so that it works for everyone."
