Statement From Congresswoman Betty McCollum (MN-04) Assessing the U.S. Commitment to Afghanistan

Tuesday, March 21, 2006

"The people of Afghanistan need both security and massive investments to provide clean water, primary health care and education for children. Meeting basic human needs and improving the quality of life is part of fighting terrorism. Unfortunately, the Bush administration started a war in Iraq, deemphasized Afghanistan, and we now see increased instability. The U.S. needs to re-focus our policy, emphasizing both security and investments in the lives of Afghanistan's people - especially the lives of women and children who continue to suffer miserably," said McCollum.
