Capito Boosts West Virginia State University's Access to Funding
Congresswomen secures designation for WVSU in College Access and Opportunity Act

WASHINGTON - Legislation passed today by the U.S. House of Representatives makes West Virginia State University (WVSU) eligible for up to $1,000,000 per year in additional funding, due to a provision included in the bill at the request of Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV).

Rep. Capito's provision, included in the College Access and Opportunity Act (H.R. 609), designates WVSU as a Historically Black Graduate Institution (HBGI). The HBGI program provides funding to innovative graduate programs in the math and science fields at eligible historically black colleges and universities. WVSU will be eligible to receive funds for its biotechnology program which prepares students for careers in health care or the environmental sciences.

"It is crucial that we make available more scientific training to our students as we strive to keep America globally competitive," Capito said. "Today's action will allow West Virginia State to grow its biotechnology program and increase the availability of ground-breaking scientific education in the Kanawha Valley."
