CONGRESSMAN THOMPSON SPEAKS OUT ON PROSECUTION OF SHERIFF MCGEE

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, United States Representative Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) released the following statement:

"Last week, I asked the Justice Department to review its decision to prosecute Sheriff McGee. On yesterday, the president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce even agreed to support our efforts to stop the senseless prosecution of an elected official who acted courageously during the worst natural disaster our Nation has ever experienced.

"We will continue to make the case for Sheriff McGee and other public servants who may be faced with similar choices in disasters to come. First responders should not have to fear prosecution for doing what is right."

Sheriff McGee seized a pair of 18-wheelers full of ice and distributed the ice to area relief centers in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
