Rep. Ted Budd (R-NC) confronted Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen over revelations that 560,000 "incarcerated individuals", including convicted Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, received $1,400 stimulus checks under the Biden American Rescue Plan, totaling at least $783 million.
Rep. Budd sent a letter to the Treasury Department on January 11, 2022 asking for updated figures and demanding answers.
Sec. Yellen was unable to provide updated figures in her testimony about how many federal prisoners received checks.
Sec. Yellen also refused to state the Biden administration's policy on sending stimulus checks to federal prisoners, saying: "I don't have an opinion to share with you".
Rep. Budd said:
"I do not think federal prisoners should be getting stimulus checks, period. Every taxpayer dollar is sacred and should be treated that way. I strongly urge your department to do better when it comes to safeguarding taxpayer dollars."
