Aderholt and Other Appropriatiors Take Action to Block Port Deal

ADERHOLT AND OTHER APPROPRIATORS TAKE ACTION TO BLOCK PORT DEAL

WASHINGTON, DC -- Congressman Robert Aderholt (R-Haleyville) today voted in the House Appropriations Committee, for an amendment to the emergency Supplemental Appropriations Bill of 2006. The amendment would block the proposed takeover of Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Co. (P&O Ports) by Dubai Ports World of the United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.). It was offered by Congressman Jerry Lewis, House Appropriations Committee Chairman.

"The people of the Fourth District have made it clear that this port deal is unacceptable. Because of the amendment's overwhelming support, I assume my colleagues are hearing the same concerns from their constituents," said Congressman Aderholt.

This amendment will not permit the use of any funds to approve or otherwise allow the acquisition of any leases, contracts, rights, or other obligations of P&O Ports by Dubai Ports World or any other legal entity affiliated with or controlled by Dubai Ports World. The Supplemental Appropriations Bill of 2006 includes defense funding for the Iraq War and funding for hurricane recovery.

"I am hopeful that this amendment will receive the same overwhelming support on the House floor that it received in the Appropriations Committee," added the congressman.

The amended Supplemental Appropriations Bill of 2006, upon committee passage, will be reported to the House for consideration.
