President Bush's 2007 Budget Hurts Women by Cutting $79 Million from Voluntary Family Planning to the World's Poorest Countries

Washington, D.C. - Congresswoman Betty McCollum (D-MN), Rep. Jim Ramstad (R-MN) and the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice celebrated International Women's Day and urged Congress to support increased funding for international family planning. McCollum has introduced H.R. 4188, the Focus on Family Health Worldwide Act, a bipartisan, pro-choice/pro-life approach to meeting the critical family planning needs of the world's poorest families.

"The goal is simple - provide couples in the world's poorest countries the ability to space their children and give mothers the opportunity to stay healthy, productive and alive," said McCollum. "Keeping poor women alive is not to be taken lightly. Over 530,000 women around the world die every year from pregnancy related causes."
