Cassidy Votes Against Abortion-on-Demand Bill to Allow Abortion Up to Birth

U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) today voted against Democrats' radical Abortion on Demand Until Birth bill that would have extended abortion access far beyond Roe v. Wade ever did. The bill would gut state laws to protect unborn children and the health and safety of their mothers by establishing a sweeping federal mandate to legalize late-term abortion.

"Democrats are endorsing an extreme viewpoint by putting this particular legislation up for a vote," said Dr. Cassidy. "I voted against this legislation before and proudly voted against it again."

Democrats' so-called the Women's Health Protection Act was rejected by the Senate with a bipartisan majority, failing by a vote of 49 to 51.

The Abortion on Demand Until Birth Act would ban many popular state laws placing reasonable limitations on abortion. The bill would:

Makes every state a late-term abortion state
Bans states from stopping gruesome dismemberment abortion
Parents would not know, or have any say over, if their daughter has an abortion
Allows mail-order abortions without an in-person visit and prescribed by a doctor outside the state or country
Bans informed consent provisions to ensure mothers have access to counseling and information about abortion complications
Bans reflection periods establishing time between the counseling or ultrasound and abortion
Bans laws prohibiting discriminatory abortions on the basis of race, sex, or diagnosis of a disability like Down syndrome
Bans laws to prevent coerced abortion
Bans conscience protections laws that protect the religious freedom rights of healthcare professionals to not participate in abortion
