Statement from Congressman Sanders on Vermont Yankee Power Uprate
"I am disappointed to learn that the NRC has decided to approve the power uprate for Vermont Yankee. This plant was built over 30 years ago to generate 540 megawatts, not more. The NRC's decision to allow this old facility to boost its output by 20% is unfair to the communities near the plant, who had a reasonable expectation that the plant would operate at no higher than its originally designed capacity.
"It goes without saying that the NRC must closely monitor this uprate. I will work hard to ensure the plant's increased power generation does not result in safety or reliability problems and that the NRC ensures that all required safety-related changes are implemented. I will work together with the delegation to exercise our oversight authority to ensure the NRC makes safety the first priority.
"I also share the concerns of the delegation that the ASLB has not set a hearing schedule yet, and urge the NRC to do so right away."
