DeLauro Hails FSIS Re-Introduction Of Consumer-Friendly Recall Rule

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (Conn.-3) today hailed the re-introduction of a rule that would reveal retail outlets that received products affected by a recall. The rule was submitted for public comment today by The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) department of the US Department of Agriculture. DeLauro is ranking member of the House Appropriations Agriculture Subcommittee.

"Recalls have serious health implications for consumers and producers alike. They spark fear and concern over where products are derived and where they may have been shipped," said DeLauro. "Revealing a list of retail outlets that have received recalled products is a consumer-friendly step that will reduce some of the concerns associated with a recall. I am delighted that the Administration has re-introduced this rule and will be reviewing it carefully to determine how we can strengthen recalls for the safety of our food."

During a hearing of the House Appropriations Agriculture subcommittee last March, DeLauro revealed that the Administration had submitted to the Office of Management and Budget a rule for consideration. DeLauro later revealed that the rule was withdrawn from consideration without the appropriate public comment period.
