DeLauro: With Latest DP World Announcement, The Devil is in the Details

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (Conn.-3) today reacted to news that a United Arab Emirates-owned company has agreed to turn over all of its operations at U.S. ports to an American "entity" with the following statement. Last night, the House Appropriations Committee, a committee in which DeLauro is a member, inserted language into a $91 billion emergency supplemental funding bill to halt the deal.

"Because of the way in which the Bush Administration approved this deal - bypassing the full review period and without even notifying Congress, I am skeptical of any announcement that does not completely remove DP World from ownership of U.S. ports. Even the way that America learned of this latest development - from a senator reading the company's press release on the floor of Congress - concerns me. In fact, the only concrete thing we know about this latest announcement is that the devil is in the details.

"Because our nation's ports are among our most critical infrastructure and we must take every precaution when it comes to ensuring their security, I would be concerned if this decision were to leave DP World even indirectly involved with the management of our ports. In the coming days, my office will be working to evaluate this announcement and its impact on the management of our nation's ports."
