Proclamation - Sunshine Week

WHEREAS, open government is one of the foundations of our republic, and North Dakota is a national leader in promoting the people's right of access to state and local government; and

WHEREAS, conducting government business in the sunshine makes for a well-informed citizenry and better public policy; and

WHEREAS, North Dakota law and the North Dakota Constitution protect citizen access to public meetings and records, and give citizens the right to protest to the attorney general if they believe these rights have been infringed; and

WHEREAS, a state constitutional amendment declaring North Dakota's policy of open government records was approved by 84 percent of the state's voters; and

WHEREAS, brave North Dakotans in uniform are defending these open-government rights and others in Iraq, Afghanistan and other countries around the world.

NOW, THEREFORE, as Governor of the State of North Dakota, I do hereby proclaim March 12-18, 2006, SUNSHINE WEEK in the state of North Dakota.
