Rep. Zeldin Statement on Proposed NY Department of Health Forced Isolation and Quarantine Regulation

Congressman Lee Zeldin (R, NY-1) just issued the following statement regarding the proposed New York State Department of Health communicable diseases isolation and quarantine regulation:

"As we've learned throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, government bureaucrats should never be trusted with unchecked power. It will inevitably lead to abuse and infringements on individual liberty. The New York Department of Health is considering a regulation that would allow the Health Department to coordinate with law enforcement to force people exposed to broadly defined "communicable diseases' to isolate and quarantine even in places that aren't their homes. This would be a massive and unprecedented expansion of the state's power.

"We are just beginning to get out from under the thumb of draconian mandates and restrictions during the COVID pandemic. This proposed regulation is not only unnecessary but is an enormous abuse of power that many New Yorkers are extremely concerned about and is further instilling a permanent pandemic mentality that has been devastating to our society. I totally oppose the adoption of this new regulation and believe that it should be killed."
