Jennifer Gonzalez Praises the Legacy of the Borinqueneers

Resident Commissioner Jenniffer González Colón praised the legacy of the Borinqueneers in United States military history and the pride of everyone in Puerto Rico with the designation of the San Juan post office as the 65th Infantry Regiment.

Today, in an act together with members of the Regiment, family members, military organizations and public servants, the commemorative plaque was placed, officially designating the post office of Calle Alondra con Ave 65 de Infantería in San Juan de Correos with the name of "Building of the Post Office of the 65th Infantry Regiment".

"The name of the 65th Infantry Regiment or Borinqueneers is recognized by all Puerto Ricans. Officially naming this mail station after them honors them while also recognizing the intimate relationship between our soldiers and the United States mail system. With this act we exhort all those who work in the post office and the public that comes in search of services, to be inspired by the regiment's deed and not always give up on giving the maximum effort to the service of Puerto Rico and our great Nation. the United States of America," said the Resident Commissioner.

Said designation, which treasures the legacy and reflects the respect of the Puerto Rican people for the sacrifice of the Borinqueños, is the result of legislation (HR 2325) led by the resident commissioner in Congress, and which became law (Public Law 116 - 86) by then President Donald Trump.

"This law allows us today to officially designate this postal service post office in honor of our Borinqueños. The designation of a public building with the name of a person or group of people is an acknowledgment that does not occur frequently. Through this act we proclaim that those recognized are worthy of being emulated", added the commissioner.

It is not the first time that the congresswoman has led actions to recognize the legacy of the Puerto Ricans. On April 13, 2021, National Borinqueños Day was manifested for the first time in the United States, a day that for many years will be marked on the calendar to celebrate the courage, service and sacrifice of the Puerto Rican soldiers of the 65th Infantry. Regiment, and expresses deep gratitude for the contribution of the Armed Forces that have been made by hundreds of miles of patriotic citizens of the United States of Puerto Rico.

The designation of this day comes from the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2021 (Public Law 116-283), where Congresswomen Jenniffer González Colón and Stephanie Murphy included an amendment to express Congressional support for the designation of April as National Borinqueños Day.

Likewise, González Colón has led part of his efforts so that Puerto Rican veterans and soldiers are duly recognized for their sacrifices to the nation.

For example, the congresswoman has assisted Puerto Ricans who do not have the Congressional Gold Medal, which was awarded to them on April 13, 2016, to receive it and together with the Library of Congress they worked on the "History of the Veterans", to collect stories, many of them unpublished, of Puerto Rican veterans. The stories of the Puerto Rican soldiers, who were scarce in the historical archives, will be impregnated along with those of their companions from the rest of the nation.

Present at the ceremony were Mr. Agustín Montañez, Veterans Lawyer, Neftalí Pluguez, Manager of the Caribbean District of the United States Postal Service, Mr. Víctor Labarca, President of the 65th Infantry Association, along with his Vice President, Mr. Commander Ismael Heredia, and other members of the Association; José Mirabal, Roberto Delgado and Freddy Molina.

Military leaders and veterans also joined; BG Narciso Cruz, Assistant General PRNG, SGM (R) René Berlingeri, Ambassador of the Army Reserve, 1st MSC, COL (R) Adalberto Rivera, Commander Military Order of the World Wars, Mr. Miguel A. Aponte Cepeda -- Officer of Retirement Services, Mr. Erick Amaro, Director of Human Resources-Division Chief of Military Personnel Ft. Buchanan.

Senators from San Juan, Henry Neumann, who chairs the Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs, and Nitza Morán also participated. Johnny Méndez, Spokesperson for the PNP in the House of Representatives, and the representative of District 3 of San Juan, Juan Oscar Morales.
