Casten, Colleagues Bipartisan Bill to Bolster Nuclear Science and Engineering Programs at American Universities Advances through Science, Space, and Technology Committee

Today, the National Nuclear University Research Infrastructure Reinvestment Act of 2021, introduced by U.S. Representative Sean Casten (IL-06), Anthony Gonzalez (R-OH), Peter Meijer (R-MI), and Bill Foster (D-IL) passed out of the House Space, Science and Technology Committee. The legislation will enhance the educational and research capabilities of nuclear science and engineering programs, meet the workforce needs of the U.S. nuclear industry, and accelerate the development of advanced nuclear technologies in the U.S.

"By revitalizing America's nuclear science and engineering infrastructure alongside our national labs to develop a new generation of advanced nuclear technology, we will take a critical step in building a zero-carbon energy system necessary to avert the most devastating impacts of the climate crisis." said Rep. Casten.

"As our country shifts towards a 21st Century grid, nuclear science and engineering programs will play a key role in advancing the next generation of reactors and developing a diverse workforce to operate them," said Rep. Gonzalez. "I am excited to introduce this bipartisan bill that will support our young scientists and engineers, advance the research and development of advanced nuclear technologies, and restore U.S. leadership in nuclear energy."
