Armstrong Applauds House Passage of the Cattle Contract Library Act of 2021

Statement

Today, Congressman Kelly Armstrong (R-ND) released the following statement after legislation he cosponsored, the Cattle Contract Library Act of 2021, overwhelmingly passed the House of Representatives. This bipartisan bill led by Congressmen Dusty Johnson (R-SD) and Henry Cuellar (D-TX) creates a library for cattle contracts within the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agriculture Marketing Service Department, providing more transparency in the market. Currently, cattlemen are unaware of contract terms being offered by packers, leading to a decline in leverage for smaller producers during price negotiations.

"Providing updated data is an important part of ensuring our ranchers have more tools at their disposal," said Congressman Armstrong. "I support Congressmen Johnson and Cuellar's bill that improves transparency in the beef supply chain and gives more leverage to North Dakota's cattle producers. I look forward to its consideration and passage in the Senate."
