U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) released a statement after yesterday's sham municipal and regional elections in Venezuela. Earlier this year, Rubio penned an op-ed where he warned, "Maduro may be willing to present a series of symbolic gestures such as "concessions,' but he will never voluntarily allow free and democratic elections to be held in Venezuela where he may lose his power and the money stolen from the Venezuelan people."

"The people of Venezuela know the worst is expected when a narco-regime conducts and manipulates illegitimate elections with so-called "members of the opposition.' Maduro will attempt to use this fraudulent process to initiate yet another round of negotiations -- not with the interim government of Juan Guaidó, but with his chosen opposition. It is essential that the U.S. and the European Union reaffirm their unwavering support to recognize the legitimate democratically-elected National Assembly and Interim President Guaidó."
