Cole Slams Democrats' Sham Process to Raise the Debt Limit

Norman, OK -- Congressman Tom Cole (OK-04), Ranking Member of the House Rules Committee, released the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives approved a rule deeming passage of a measure to raise the public debt limit by $480 billion.

"I am deeply concerned by the method House Democrats used to raise the debt ceiling, skipping normal debate and bypassing a standalone vote on the measure going to the president's desk," said Cole. "Deploying this sham process on a matter of such consequence should concern all Americans, who trust their representatives to give an item like this due floor time and full consideration.

"While I certainly recognize the need to address the debt ceiling, this third attempt by Democrats is still deeply flawed because it fails to include responsible provisions to reduce the deficit and slow the growth of the national debt. Indeed, like the last two times, I still cannot support a measure that ultimately gives Democrats license to pave a superhighway to a socialist America and great entitlement society. Unfortunately, that is exactly what they intend to do."
