WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congressman Anthony G. Brown (MD-04) released the following statement in response to the deportation of Haitian asylum seekers and horrendous images of mistreatment on the southern border:

"I am deeply concerned with the reported mistreatment of Haitian migrants at the hands of Border Patrol officers on our southern border. These asylum seekers deserve decency, compassion and a fair review of their cases. America must always lead by example, protect human rights, and serve as a beacon to oppressed peoples around the globe. While I believe we must humanely enforce our immigration laws, we cannot ignore the plight of Haitian refugees, nor the graphic, shocking images of intimidation by officers.

"We need a full accounting of the response to these refugees. We also must extend and redesignate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian migrants fleeing natural disaster and political instability in their home country."
