Congressman Anthony Brown's Statement On The End Of The War In Afghanistan

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congressman Anthony G. Brown (MD-04), a member of the House Armed Services Committee and 30-year Army veteran, released the following statement on the end of America's war in Afghanistan:

"After two decades of war, thousands of American and Afghan lives lost and trillions of dollars, it was time to bring our mission in Afghanistan to a close. The end of America's longest war is a solemn occasion, as our country and the world continue to process the historic airlift campaign undertaken by our brave men and women in uniform, the tragic loss of servicemembers and Afghans during this operation and the lasting toll from twenty years of war.

"We must ensure that every American and Afghan partner wishing to leave the country can do so safely and utilize every diplomatic tool and channel available to get them out. We must continue our work to protect our national security, respond to international terror networks, deter our geopolitical rivals and counter malign actors on the world stage. I look forward to working closely with President Biden to ensure the success of these efforts.

"This is a time to reflect on the extraordinary efforts and immense sacrifices of our service members, military families, our allies and Afghan partners. Today, and every day, we thank them for their service and vow to uphold our sacred promise to our veterans."
