Keating, Neal, Boyle, Fitzpatrick Statement on the UK's Extension of Trade Grace Periods and Potential Impacts to the Good Friday Agreement

Statement

Date: Sept. 10, 2021
Issues: Foreign Affairs

"The United Kingdom has unilaterally decided to extend the grace periods covering post-Brexit trade from Great Britain to Northern Ireland. This is an irresponsible decision that could potentially jeopardize the Northern Ireland Protocol that was successfully negotiated as part of the UK's withdrawal from the European Union. While we recognize the difficulties of these negotiations and applaud all parties for their efforts to reach a fair and equitable solution, we encourage the UK to honor its commitments and implement the Northern Ireland Protocol as agreed upon without renegotiation. Implementation of the Northern Ireland protocol is imperative to preserve and strengthen the Good Friday Agreement and as a result, peace on the island of Ireland."
