Hoeven Introduces Resolution At GEC For More E-85 Vehicles, More Models For Greater Energy Independence
Gov. John Hoeven has drafted and introduced a resolution passed by the 32-member Governors' Ethanol Coalition calling on major automakers to produce more flexible fuel ethanol vehicles and more models for consumers to choose from. Flexible fuel vehicles are able to use E-85, a blend of fuel consisting of 85 percent ethanol produced from domestic corn and other vegetable matter, and 15 percent gasoline.
Hoeven was joined by GEC chair for 2006 Gov. Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas Tuesday at the annual meeting of the Governors' Ethanol Coalition (GEC) in Washington, D.C. in presenting the resolution to representatives from Ford Motor Co., General Motors and Daimler Chrysler on behalf of the 32-member governors who approved it. The resolution recognized the automakers for recent increases in the production of flexible fuel vehicles. U.S. Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman was also present for the event, and commended the effort.
"Reducing our dependency on imported petroleum will require an act of national will and a real commitment by every sector of our economy - by industry, as well as individuals," Hoeven said. "Today, governors from across the nation are urging automakers to meet that challenge for the good of our security and the good of our economy."
The resolution stresses that domestic production and use of ethanol improves the nation's economic competitiveness, increases energy independence, enhances national security, and lessens the cost of energy for families and businesses. At the same time, ethanol is good for the environment, reducing harmful emissions.
Formed in 1991, the 32-member Governors' Ethanol Coalition also includes representatives from Brazil, Canada, Sweden, Mexico and Thailand. The organization's goals are to increase ethanol use, decrease the nation's dependence on imported energy sources, improve the environment and stimulate the national economy. Hoeven chaired the organization in 2003.
