Letter to the Hon. Miguel Cardona, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education - Foxx, Burr Demand Clarity on Admin's Student Loan Repayment Plan

Letter

Date: July 29, 2021

Today, Republican Leader of the Education and Labor Committee Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) and Republican Leader of the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee Senator Richard Burr (R-NC) sent a letter to Department of Education Secretary Cardona demanding transparency surrounding his plan to transition student loan borrowers back to repayment by October 1, 2021.

In the letter, the Members write: "[W]e are worried borrowers are receiving mixed messages. Our Democrat colleagues continue to call for another extension of the repayment freeze even though they know your own staff says that they are working to meet the October 1 deadline to return to repayment." The Members continue: "Mr. Secretary, we assume you are in communication with President Biden and have told him what you told us: that your agency can restart monthly student loan payments this fall…Student loan borrowers deserve clarity."
