Diaz-Balart Statement on President's 2007 Budget

WASHINGTON—Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL) today said the president's budget will fund America's priorities while maintaining fiscal responsibility and accountability.

"President Bush has provided a comprehensive budget that emphasizes our nation's priorities - national security, continuing our economic growth and enhancing America's future," Diaz-Balart said. "This budget keeps federal spending in check while still focusing on key initiatives like achieving energy independence, keeping America's workers competitive in the 21st Century economy, reducing health care costs and providing our military and law enforcement personnel the tools they need to defend our nation."

Like last year's budget, the President's budget holds the growth of overall discretionary spending below inflation and proposes to reduce non-security discretionary spending below the previous year's level. This budget terminates or reduces 141 programs that are not getting results or not fulfilling essential priorities, for a proposed savings of $14.7 billion, building on last year's success in which savings of $6.5 billion were achieved in 89 of the President's proposals.

"As a member of the House Budget Committee," Diaz-Balart continued, "I have been dedicated to eliminating waste, fraud and abuse in the federal government, and I am pleased to see President Bush make strong efforts in his budget to do the same. President Bush has given Congress a solid guideline to consider, and I am committed to helping craft a federal budget that meets the needs of the American people."
