U.S. Representatives Darin LaHood (R-IL) and Rick Larsen (D-WA), co-chairs of the bipartisan U.S.-China Working Group, released the below statement on the conviction of Tong Ying-kit under China's National Security Law:
"The conviction of Tong Ying-kit shows the extent to which China's National Security Law has destroyed freedom of speech and judicial independence in Hong Kong. That a banner with a popular protest slogan could be grounds for life imprisonment shows the freedoms Hong Kongers have lost over the past thirteen months since the law was enacted. We will be closely watching Mr. Tong's sentencing and the trials of others charged under the National Security Law."
