Torres Emphasizes the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption with Central American Business Leaders

Last week, Congresswoman Norma J. Torres (CA-35) met with members of the Federation of Industrial Chambers of Central America (FECAICA) to reinforce that investment and economic growth cannot occur without addressing systemic corruption, attacks on the rule of law, and the degradation of democratic values.

Rep. Torres released the following statement:

"I will not turn a blind eye to corruption and to those who do not uphold the Rule of Law in favor of investment and business opportunities," Rep. Norma J. Torres said. To that end, our government should only partner with those who have demonstrated that they are committed to working through a fair system that helps the people, instead of advancing corrupt interests."

"Central American business leaders assured me that they pay their taxes, are committed to supporting the rule of law, and are working to ensure that micro businesses have access to lending and growth opportunities. The business leaders recognize that without these priorities in place, the U.S. will not invest in a system rife with corruption," Rep. Torres continued. "I emphasized that I would judge them by their actions and not their words. I look forward to FECAICA members following through on these commitments to positively shape the future of Central America."
