Rep. Ted Budd Sponsors Bill to Reclassify Fentanyl as Schedule I Substance

Rep. Ted Budd (R-NC) has co-sponsored H.R. 3269, the Federal Initiative to Guarantee Health by Targeting (FIGHT) Fentanyl Act. The bill would make the current temporary classification of fentanyl as a Schedule I substance permanent.

The bill is bipartisan, led in the House by Reps. Vern Buchanan (R-FL) and Chris Pappas (D-NH), and Sens. Rob Portman (R-OH) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) in the Senate.

Rep. Budd said in a statement:

"Last year, there were more than 93,000 overdose deaths in our country, which was the highest spike in deaths in 50 years. The pandemic certainly made this tragic situation worse, but it also underscores why Congress must continue to act to save lives. Permanently classifying fentanyl as a Schedule I substance will give federal and state governments more options to fight the spread of this lethal drug."
