Kaptur, Keating Release Statement on LGBTQI+ issues in Poland

Statement

Democratic Co-Chairs of the Congressional Poland Caucus, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09) and Congressman Bill Keating (MA-09), released the following statement on LGBTQI+ issues in Poland:

"During Pride month, it is important that we highlight the ongoing plight of LGBTQI+ Polish citizens as they struggle for recognition of their fundamental human rights. Increasingly dangerous rhetoric and a proliferation of discriminatory legislative initiatives in Poland are fostering an environment hostile to the safety and wellbeing of the LBTQI+ community.

While the security relationship between the United States and Poland remains strong, we are concerned by efforts to restrict the freedoms of LGBTQI+ people, including the establishment of "LGBTQI+-Free Zones," references to a "rainbow plague," prohibitions on adoption by LGBTQI+ families, and the arrest of activists engaged in protests for equality. Unfortunately, these actions mirror those taking place in neighboring Russia, where LGTBQI+ individuals routinely face discrimination and harassment.

As Members of the United States Congress and as Democratic co-chairs of the Congressional Poland Caucus, we pledge our support for all LGBTQI+ people around the world, and will continue to monitor and bring attention to this issue through hearings of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and Europe Subcommittee. We urge the Polish government and local authorities to afford dignity, respect, and equal treatment under the law for all their citizens, regardless of whom they love."
