Suozzi Leads Bipartisan Members of Congress in The Urgent Call on The House Floor to Repeal Salt Cap

Last night, Congressman Tom Suozzi (D-Long Island, Queens) continued his tireless efforts to repeal the SALT cap by leading 10 bipartisan members of Congress on the House Floor to highlight how the cap has hurt middle class families across the country and undermined progressive state programs. "Last night we made our message clear -- the cap on the SALT deduction has hurt middle class families and was an intentional attack on high tax states," said Suozzi. "For months we have been making our voices heard, and we will not stop until the SALT cap is repealed."

Since the start of this year, Suozzi has continued to organize and lead efforts showcasing how the SALT cap has unfairly hurt middle class and unions families across New York and the country. Last week, Suozzi organized an event with union officials to communicate how the SALT cap is anti-union. Later today, Suozzi will host an event with the U.S. Conference of Mayors, the National Association of Counties, and the National League of Cities to highlight how the cap has undermined the ability of local governments to raise the revenue they need to support education, public safety, housing, transportation, health care, and many other critical public services.

04/15/21: Suozzi forms the bipartisan SALT Caucus which had 32 founding members in 24 hours
06/23/21: Organizing press conference with teacher, firefighter, and police unions to communicate how SALT is a labor issue
06/29/21: Organized a special order on the House Floor with over a dozen bipartisan members of Congress to highlight how the CAP has undermined middle-class families across the country.
06/30/21: Organized a press conference with the state and city elected officials to highlight how the SALT cap has undermined the ability for localities to raise revenue to support social programs.

In 2017, the cap on the SALT deduction was put in place. Since then, it has resulted in double taxation on thousands of middle-class families by imposing a tax on taxes already paid. In high cost of living areas, the cap has continued to accelerate a race to the bottom that drives the wealthy to other states, often subsidized by the very states their new residents have left. This leaves middle-and lower-income taxpayers holding the bag to pay for school, police, fire, and other essential state and local services.
