Washington, D.C. -- Today, Rep. Ted Budd (R-NC) introduced the America Stands With Israel Act. He was joined by Rep. Greg Murphy, M.D. (R-NC).

In the event of an imminent threat to Israel, the bill authorizes the President to take whatever military steps may be necessary to protect Israel at the request of the Prime Minister. This would include sending immediate and unrestricted defensive measures and services.

Rep. Budd said in a statement:

"The United States must stand shoulder to shoulder with the State of Israel because they are our friend, our ally, and the only democracy in the Middle East. They have been the target of relentless campaigns to attack their civilian population and their very existence as a nation. Given this ongoing threat, the United States government should have the latitude to assist Israel without delay, should they come under attack again. Israel has every right to defend themselves, and the United States of America should have their back."

Bill background:

The President, upon request of the Prime Minister of Israel, is authorized to carry out actions necessary to ensure the survival of Israel and its people from an existing or imminent threat.

The President shall submit a report to Congress no later than 48 hours after exercising authority. Detailing the circumstances necessitating the exercising of power, the constitutional and legislative authority to take such action, and the estimated scope and duration of the conflict
