Babin Fights to Protect Workers and District from Pemex-Shell Refinery Deal

U.S. Congressman Brian Babin (TX-36) issued the following statement opposing the sale of Shell Oil's refinery operations in Deer Park, Texas, to the Mexican state-owned petroleum company, Pemex:

"Simply put, Pemex does not have the executive, managerial, or technical expertise to operate this state-of-the-art facility safely," said Babin. "This proposed sale greatly increases the risks of an industrial accident, serious local environmental degradation, and damage to our local economy thanks to poor corporate management. Unfortunately, Pemex has a problematic track record when dealing with U.S. businesses and has a history of backing out of contracts, soliciting bribes, and playing dirty in corporate disputes.

"For these reasons, I sent a letter to the regulatory body responsible for approving this sale, the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS). Our energy companies are required to follow the most stringent regulations ensuring the protection of Americans and the security of this vital industry, and I lack the confidence that Pemex can or even desires to meet these high expectations."
