Capito Statement on Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Emergency Rules

02/08/06

WASHINGTON, DC -(2/8)- Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) issued the following statement on last night's announcement by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) that the agency will implement new emergency rules to improve mine evacuation.

"MSHAs emergency action is a step in the right direction in improving mine safety. The rule will increase the oxygen supply for miners below ground and require fast notification of rescue authorities when an accident takes place. These provisions are an important part of the West Virginia delegations mine safety bill. I will continue pushing Congress to pass legislation that will improve mine safety technology, enhance penalties for negligence, and increase the availability of rescue teams."
