Torres Welcomes Special Envoy Zuniga to Central America Caucus Inaugural Event

Congresswoman Norma J. Torres (CA-35), Co-Chair of the Congressional Central America Caucus, welcomed Special Envoy for the Northern Triangle Ricardo Zuniga to the Caucus' inaugural event of the 117th Congress. The virtual briefing was an opportunity for the bipartisan group of lawmakers to hear directly from a key official within the Biden Administration's efforts to address root causes of migration in Central America and other regional issues.

Torres, who is the sole Central American currently serving in Congress, founded the Caucus and has co-Chaired with a Republican counterpart ever since.

Rep. Torres released the following statement:

"For nearly six years, the bipartisan Central America Caucus has provided lawmakers with unique insights to better understand the complex challenges of this region, and that continued with a briefing from Special Envoy Zuniga," Rep. Norma J. Torres said. "The information he shared with our members is vital as we work with the Biden-Harris Administration to help stabilize the region and uphold the rule of law. I thank Special Envoy Zuniga for joining us, and for his ongoing diplomatic efforts on behalf of the American people. I look forward to continuing our productive relationship as we address the root causes of migration abroad to address immigration challenges here at home."

Founded in November 2015, the Congressional Central America Caucus is a bipartisan group of Members of Congress who are committed to learning about the region, monitoring U.S. foreign assistance, developing ideas for improving policy, and fostering the relationship between the United States and these nations. With the Biden Administration's recent focus on U.S. policy in the region, robust Congressional engagement is even more critical to ensure these funds are spent wisely and that the results are sustained.

Over the last five years, the Congressional Central American Caucus has met with visiting heads of state, facilitated briefings with high-level U.S. government officials, and used its leverage to influence U.S. policy towards the region.
