02/03/06

Washington, DC - Rep. Bernie Sanders today announced an agreement with the Venezuelan government, CITGO Petroleum Corporation, the State of Vermont, Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity (CVOEO) and Citizens Energy to bring over 2.5 million gallons of discounted home heating oil into Vermont. 2.4 million gallons of the oil will be sold at a 40% discount to participants of Vermont's Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), Crisis Fuel Assistance Program, and the WARMTH Program. The remaining 108,000 gallons of fuel will be distributed free of charge to homeless shelters throughout Vermont. Officials from the Venezuelan government, CITGO, Citizens Energy, CVOEO and the Vermont Fuel Dealers will join Sanders at an event on Tuesday, February 7 that will mark the start of the program.

Sanders said, "At a time when home heating oil costs are soaring, this agreement will bring much-needed relief to thousands of senior citizens and low-income families. This program will help ensure that no one in Vermont goes cold this winter. I want to thank the Venezuelan government, CITGO, Citizens Energy, CVOEO, and the State of Vermont for their hard work in making this happen."
