Federal Disaster Assistance Funds Available to Sacramentans for New Year's Storm Recovery

Press Release

Date: Feb. 3, 2006
Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Doris O. Matsui (CA-5) issued the following statement that Sacramento County is among the areas eligible for federal funds to aid the region's recovers from the New Year's Storms.

"Having the designation of major disaster apply to Sacramento County will allow Sacramentans to request funds to repair their homes or replace belongings lost in the storm. Additionally, the county will have access to an additional source of revenue for the unexpected costs associated with the storms, the extra hours of employees, as well as repairs necessary for infrastructure and buildings. I encourage all Sacramentans to explore whether they are eligible for these funds and I hope the county will utilize this additional resource."

Because of the major disaster designation by the federal government, funding assistance will be available to individuals and households impacted by the storms. The state and local government and certain private, non-profit organizations will have access to funds for emergency work and the repair and replacement of disaster-damaged public facilities. Hazard mitigation will also be available which will assist with their efforts to prevent or reduce long-term risks to people and property from natural hazards.
