Matsui Secures Over $65 Million for Sacramento Flood Control Projects in President's Budget

Washington, DC - Congresswoman Doris O. Matsui (CA-5) issued the following statement on the record budget funding of over $65 million for Sacramento's flood control projects, which includes over $35 million for projects to strengthen and maintain Sacramento's levees. This is more than double the nearly $32 million for Sacramento's projects recommended in last year?s budget.

"Doubling the budget for Sacramento's flood control projects is a powerful acknowledgement of Sacramento's urgent need for increased protection and the unnecessary risk the region faces. I am pleased to see the federal recognition of the need to ensure public safety and look forward to working with my colleagues to fund these critical flood control projects," said Congresswoman Matsui.

Sacramento Flood Control Projects

$7.313 million for South Sacramento County Streams

$10.96 million for Sacramento River Bank Protection

$46.8 million for American River Watershed, specifically

$17.4 million for Folsom Common Features

$6.0 million Folsom Dam Modifications

$23.4 million for Folsom Dam Raise and Bridge

This year's budget is just $5 million or 7% shy of the Corps of Engineers' full project execution capability for FY'07. In comparison, last year's budget numbers were 55% below capability. Because of this strong funding increase, Sacramento's flood control projects appear well-positioned as Congress begins the FY'07 Appropriations process.
